JOHNSON, Sue Land, 78, of Sun City Center, passed awayFriday, July 14, 2006, at South Bay Hospital after a brief illness following surgery. She was born to Hazel and Bob Land June 18, 1928, in Iraan, Texas. Growing up in Sinton, Texas, she was a high school cheerleader and officer in the National Honor Society. In December 1947, she married her high school sweetheart, Samuel C. Johnson. They began their 36 year marriage together in Waco, Texas, followed by several moves throughout the country. She worked as a telephone operator before marriage and in Louisiana and Michigan.Sue was an accessory buyer for a small woman's boutique, and later enjoyed her position as a successful and friendly bank teller for First Chicago in Ill.. One of her proudest accomplishments was obtaining her Bachelor of Arts at Mundelein College in Chicago, Ill., where she graduated summa cum laude in 1983. Sue is listed in the Who's Who of college students, where she is recognized for her many academic successes. Her love of golf brought her many awards, recognition and club championships, as well as years of enjoyment and wonderful friends. Sue has been involved in Mid-Gulf for years, as a competitive golf player and served on their board of officers. She loved to watch the sun rise every morning and thought her life in retirement was just perfect, doing the things she really loved... playing golf, bridge, mah jongg and being with her friends. Sue was always first to offer help and was famous for her baked goods. Throughout her life, she was involved in volunteer activities such as; Girl and Boy Scouts, a volunteer at Brentwood Nursing Home (Chicago, Ill.), a volunteer working with handicapped youth, on her Sun City Center homes association board, and, most recently, a Race for the Cure golf tournaments. Sue was a proud and loving grandmother and great grandmother. As a 22 year member of the PEO Sisterhood, Sue served as an officer of her chapter in Illinois, as well as, in her Sun City Center group. She loved gardening, cooking, theater, good jazz, golf, fine food and wine, and the company of family and friends. Sue was loved by all and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. She was preceded in death by husband, Samuel C. Johnson; her brother, Neal Land; and her parents, Hazel and Bob Land. Survivors include her children Christie Melpolder, Overland Park, Kan., Samuel F. Johnson, Raleigh, N.C.; her twin sister, Mary Lou Moore, Sinton, Texas; her brother, Charles J. Land, Sinton, Texas; her brother, Leo Land, Cuero, Texas; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.She will be greatly and dearly missed. The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Monday, July 17, 2006, at Sun City Center Funeral Home, 1851 Rickenbacker Drive, Sun City Center, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Susan G. Komen, Race for the Cure, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244.
