Sue Ellen (Manis) Cox passed away on March 8, 2012 at Heritage Woods Assisted Living Center in Benton. She was born the 5th child of Archie and Corda (Tweety) Manis on October 23, 1935. Upon her mother's passing, she lived with her Uncle James "Smokey" and Aunt Ethel Hill of West Frankfort. She attended school at Edwards Grade School and graduated from FCHS in 1953. After graduation, she went to live with her sister Arletta and Jim Sullivan in Anderson, Indiana. She met and married George Hoffman, and together they had three children, Jennifer, Mike, and Beth. She later moved home to West Frankfort and in 1965 married attorney Lloyd Donald Cox in Benton. Two stepsons now formed a family of five children and Justus Cox was added in 1969. Sue jokingly said that "Grand Central Station was up and running." Don preceded her in death in December 1971. Sue was a tireless worker who always put her children first, and after Don's passing she began work as a receptionist for Dr. Richard Simpson. She later left to begin a job at The Daily American Newspaper in West Frankfort where she was the Lifestyle Editor. Despite not having a college degree, she became well known for her entertaining and poignant stories of everyday people. She began a popular weekly column, "Week in Week Out" that depicted her humorous and insightful look into the life of a "real" single mother. Nothing was more honest and meaningful than the thoughts she shared with her readers each week. She retired in the late 1990's from the newspaper and began working part time as a secretary at Westminister Presbyterian Church in Benton, where she was also the organist and a member. In her rare free time, she enjoyed golf, reading (which was her passion), working with her sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, and playing the piano and organ. She adored being outside, working in her flowers, and playing with her grandchildren. She always said that the most thankless, tiring, and utterly joyous reason for her being on this earth was to be a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. If there was a church, community, or school function, recital, musical, ballgame, or any activity involving a Hoffman, Cox, or Peebles, she would most likely be there supporting them. She also loved all St. Louis sports, high school, and college basketball. If a ballgame was on TV her sister Shirley said "Don't go to Sue's house, because she will just ignore you." She had met several Cardinals players. She was a diehard Cardinal fan throughout her lifetime. She was thrilled when her beloved underdogs won the 2011 World Series in her honor. She is survived by children, Jennifer Peebles and husband Keil of Johnston city, Michael Hoffman and wife Anita of Benton, Beth Ann Hoffman of Benton, and Justus Cox and special friend Judy of Chicago. Stepsons, Courtney Cox and wife Leslie, Kevin Cox and the late Caryl Cox all of Benton. Grandchildren: Chesney Baltrusis and husband Bart of Royalton, Tyler Peebles and wife Rachel of Energy, Grayson Peebles of Johnston City, Maria, Christian, and Nicholas Hoffman all of Benton, Ben Cox and wife Carrie of Benton, Nathaniel Cox of Murray, KY, Eli Cox and wife Lindsay of Benton, and Tim Cox of Benton. Great grandchildren: Kiley, Korinn, and Korben Cox of Benton; Jilianne and Crosby Cox also of Benton. Her sister and best friend, Shirley White of West Frankfort, brother, Charles Manis and wife Mary of West Frankfort. Her sister-in-law, Marilyn Glenn of West Frankfort, sister-in-law, Donna Manis of Batavia, IL, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Sue Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Arletta Sullivan; brothers, Jack and George Manis; husband, Lloyd D. Cox. The family wishes to thank Dr. Harrison and Dr. Pineda for their care and support. A special thank you to the staff at Heritage Woods and Hospice of Southern Illinois, for the love and understanding shown to our mother and her family during her illness. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois. Envelopes will be available and accepted at the funeral home. She leaves behind a legacy of laughter and love to her family and friends. In her last journal, mom wrote "Having a family means never being alone, never facing problems alone and having someone to share the joy and tears of your life. As long as you have family-you belong." Funeral services will be on Monday, March 12, 2012 at Union Funeral Home Ð West Frankfort, Illinois at 11:00a.m. with Pastor Mike Cash officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the funeral home from 5:00-8:00p.m. Interment will be in Mt. Etna Cemetery Ð Akin, Illinois. On line Condolences of Sympathy may be made at www.unionfh.com.
