Steven Michael Martin May 01, 1915 - September 24, 2004 Funeral arrangements by Glen Eden Funeral Home (Winnipeg) (formerly Steven Shiska) On Friday, September 24, 2004, Steve passed away at his residence in Torrance, CA aged 89 years. Predeceased by his father and mother, Theodore and Eva Shysha; sisters, Mary Gosnowski and Sophie Kowalchuk. Steve leaves behind his nephew Harry (Shirley and family) Kowalchuk; nieces, Nellie Bonkowski and Helen Klochek, Mildred Ierullo and family, Anne from St. Catharines, ON;great-nephews, James (Joanne and family) Fredericks, Dalton (Linda and family) Fredericks,Ronald (Lucy and family) Fredericks, Bob Fredericks and family, Robert (Idelle and family) Kowalchuk, Barri Kowalchuk, Kelly Kowalchuk; great-niece Susan Bonkowski (Richard Parent and family); and many other great-great-nephews, nieces and close friends. Steve attended Norquay School and then St. Paul's College in 1933. He played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1937. Steve was awardeda hockey scholarship at Loyola Marymount University in California and played professional hockey for the Los Angeles Monarchs. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and served in Europe. Steve was a lawyer in Long Beach, CA (Martin & Stamp Law Offices) and upon retirement in 1995 he still did legal work for close friends. He spent much of his time golfing, downhill skiing and playing tennis. His athleticism came naturally as he played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the same time as Fritzi Hanson. He also coached the Crusaders Football Club at St. Paul's College from 1933 to 1936. Resently a record of his accomplishments was given to Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. He played in many junior football championships with men like Ben Haskins and Gerry James Sr. Eddy Cass helped him get scholarships i nthe United States where Steve played baseball, hockey and football. Steve lived in Point Douglas on Grove St., a close neighbour of Bill Juzda. Special thanks to Dorothy O'Donnell, close friend and legal associate of many years of Torrance, CA, James and Joanne Fredericks for making Steve's last days comfortable as well as to all staff at St. Boniface Hospital and Torrance Memorial Hospital. Prayers were said on Sunday, October 3 at 7:00pm in the chapel of Glen Eden Funeral Home, 4477 Main St. Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 4 at 10:00am also in the chapel. Fr. Terance McGrath officiating. Viewing will take place one hour prior. Interment at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens - Garden of Prayer.
