Stephen Michael Watson The final splashes of colour have been brushed across the canvas of the creative life that was Stephen Michael Watson. The brushes are now cleaned and stored, and the painting is drying, waiting to be admired for the amazing piece that has transpired. Surrounded by his adoring family, Stephen breathed his last on Thursday morning, August 30th, enveloped in the love and music that gave him the greatest peace he could imagine, no longer able to fight the tough battle he braved without complaint. At 54 years old, this young man has inspired the lives of countless, not only through his artistic talents but also through the way he lived his life, giving love and respect for every living creature on this planet. As a vegan, an activist and a provocative artist, Stephen worked tirelessly to teach respect and compassion for all living beings on this planet. Through his involvement with Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Stephen tried to teach and inspire people to reduce their carbon footprint and treat mother earth with love and respect. Stephen’s wife, Renee, is his true companion, the artist’s muse who returns his love full force, in a relationship so full of love and adoration that it was obvious to anyone who spent all of five minutes with the couple. Since Stephen’s prognosis, his main concern has been his family and when told of the seriousness of his condition, he first words were,“I am going to have to break Renee’s heart”. Stephen’s family were his life, his source of constant love and his passion. His last days were spent with family members by his bedside: Renee, Shawn Watson, Lea Watson, Garrett Watson, Hillary Watson, Sharyn & Peter VanDerGulik, Rosemarie Pestill& Tambrey VanDerGulik- Ratzer. For 4 days, his room was filled with music,tributes,letters and poems being read to him,phone calls for Renee from her many family members and friends in London, Ontario,flowers to brighten his room,and his wonderful paintings surrounding him. Steve’s passion, in addition to his awe-inspiring artwork, was supporting his older brother Paul’s environmental missions through his organization,the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
