Avis de décès de Sr. -Jeanne Johnson

Johnson, Sr. Jeanne C.S.J. LATHAM Sister Jeanne Johnson, C.S.J. (Sister Jeanne Miriam), 96, died Friday, November 9, 2012, at St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 75 years. Sister Jeanne, the former Catherine Ellen Johnson, was born on January 2, 1916, in Gloversville, daughter of the late John and Mary Fernandez Johnson. She graduated from Gloversville High School and attended the College of Saint Rose. On March 19, 1937, Sister Jeanne entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph and professed final vows on August 15, 1942. She received a bachelor's degree from the College of Saint Rose and a master's degree from the Catholic University of America. For 41 years, Sister Jeanne taught in elementary and secondary schools in the Albany, Syracuse and Honolulu dioceses and at the College of Saint Rose. In addition, she served as part of the security staff at Carondelet Commons in Watervliet, volunteered at Bethany Hospitality Center in Troy, and worked in the RSVP Office and the AIDS Council of Northeast New York, both in Albany. Sister Jeanne also volunteered at St. Joseph's Provincial House as a staff member in both central supply and Mulberry Hill Arts. Sister Jeanne's primary ministry was teaching, and she was blessed with a mind that enjoyed both the wonders of science and the beauty of art. For four decades she creatively used the power of combining science and art to inspire and engage her students. Later in her life, Sister Jeanne mastered the many facets of ceramics. Reveling in the artistic beauty of shaping the clay and understanding the chemical properties of the glazes reacting in the kiln was, for Sister Jeanne, the perfect combination of science and art. Also dear to Sister Jeanne's heart were her 10 years in Hawaii where she discovered the innate beauty of the diverse island culture. Sister Jeanne was a woman of faith, prayer and principle, and she will be dearly missed. Sister Jeanne is survived by her sisters-in-law, Thelma, Delores and Mary Johnson; by several nieces and nephews and their families; and by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by three brothers, John, William and Donald Johnson and by many dear friends in the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Jeanne's funeral liturgy will be held Tuesday, November 13, at 10:30 a.m. from the chapel of St. Joseph's Provincial House, Latham. Interment will be in Our Lady Queen of Virgins Cemetery on the Provincial House grounds. Calling hours will be held at the Provincial House on Monday, November 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Contributions in Sister Jeanne's memory may be made to the Development Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Latham, NY 12110.
