Family-Placed ObituaryJAMES HENRY CURTIN, Sr. Devoted husband, loving father, retired Shell Oil and Massey Coal executive, and friend to all he met - died peacefully at the Hospice of Palm Beach County, Florida, on May 15, 2010. Jim was 84. Jim was born in Fall River, MA on July 20, 1925, to Henry Curtin and Grace OÕNeil. Jim is survived by his two brothers Ð Henry and Neil Ð and his sister, Joyce. In 1931, JimÕs family settled in Flushing, NY. Jim attended St. AndrewÕs Elementary School and Bishop Loughlin High School. In high school, Jim met his future wife, Gertrude (Trudy) Imholz. Upon graduation in 1943, Jim enlisted in the Navy. Jim was assigned to the NavyÕs first V-12 officerÕs training class at Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA. After additional training at Fort Schuyler, Jim served in the Pacific Theater as officer-in-charge of LCT-400, an amphibious landing craft. Honorably discharged in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant, Jim served in the Naval Reserve until 1959. After the war, Jim returned to Holy Cross. He graduated in 1948 with a B.S. in Business Administration. Moving to New York City, Jim pursued graduate studies in accounting and economics at New York University. In 1949, Jim married Trudy Imholz. Jim and Trudy had five children Ð Jim, Jr., Tom, John, Maureen, and Bob Ð all of whom survive. In 1957, Jim moved his growing family from Fresh Meadows, Queens to Malverne, Long Island. They joined Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. For many years Jim served the community and parish as Little League coach and committee volunteer. Jim loved spending free time with his family at the Ocean Club in Atlantic Beach, NY. Jim especially enjoyed organizing and playing beach volleyball. In 1948, Jim began a long and successful career as an oil and coal marketing executive with the Royal Dutch Shell Group and subsidiaries. Between 1948 and 1966, Jim held increasingly senior management positions with Asiatic Petroleum Corporation in New York. In 1966-67, Jim undertook a temporary assignment to London, England as Group Supervisor with ShellÕs International Oil Exchanges Division. Returning to New York, Jim served in a variety of management positions with Shell, culminating as General Manager of AsiaticÕs Transportation and Supplies /Acquisitions and Trading Division. In 1976, Jim was named Vice-President and Director of ShellÕs recently formed Scallop Coal Corporation. In 1981, Jim and Trudy moved to Richmond, VA, where Jim became Executive Vice President of Massey Coal Export Company. Jim retired in 1990. In 1994, Jim and Trudy began spending winters in Jupiter, FL. They took up full-time residence in 2001. Trudy passed away in 2007. An avid golfer, Jim was never happier than when sharing a round of golf, or meal, with his many, many friends. He treasured those times (and friends) Ð most recently at the Tequesta Country Club in Florida Ð and earlier at Brandermill (Richmond) and Hempstead (Long Island) golf clubs. Jim loved to fish and was an avid reader. A tireless worker in retirement, and always wanting to make a contribution, Jim volunteered every Thursday at the Jupiter Hospital. Jim also served long hours as condominium President and country club committee member. Those who knew Jim remember him as a larger-than-life figure who never forgot a name or face. JimÕs progress through a room was not complete until he met and traded stories with everyone. Unfailingly generous with his time and enormous energies, Jim is remembered Ð like many of the 'Greatest Generation' Ð as a patriotic servant to his country, rock of stability, and loving husband, father and brother. We will all miss him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Hobe Sound, FL. Friends are invited to meet with the family from 5-7 PM, Monday, May 17, 2010 (today) at the Taylor & Modeen Funeral Home, 250 Center St., Jupiter, FL.
