Sister Joan went home to God on Thursday, January 16, 2014 in Jolenta Convent. She was born in Syracuse, NY to Edward and Florence (Korthas) O'Neill. Sister was 88 years old and had been a Sister of St. Francis for 65 years. She received a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics from Syracuse University and a Master's Degree in Business Education from Marywood College in Scranton, PA. Her educational ministries were in Whitesboro, Oswego Catholic High and Maria Regina College in New York State where she touched the lives and hearts of many students and their parents. Sister was also a secretarial assistant for the Sisters of St. Francis and in her retired years she volunteered in the NunBetter Chocolate Shop. Sister will always be remembered for her years of dedicated service and in the hearts of all who loved her for her kindness, gentle manner, sense of humor and her dry wit. Sister is pre-deceased by three brothers, Thomas, Robert and Edward O'Neill; and by three sisters, Esther Heil, Ruth Shaw and Catherine Mullen. She is survived by several nieces, nephews and the Sisters of St. Francis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 20, 2014 at 7 p.m. at St. Anthony Convent Chapel. Calling hours will be in St. Anthony Convent Solarium, 1024 Court Street on Monday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. A farewell service will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at the convent chapel. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
