McDONALD - Sr. Mary Ellen, SSA August 25, 1908 - July 18, 2009 Sister Mary Ellen McDonald was born in Antigonish, NS, the eldest of eight children born to William and Flora McDonald. When Mary Ellen was a young girl, the family moved to British Columbia. She entered the Sisters of St. Ann in 1925 and pronounced her vows on August 15, 1927. Extensive studies in: University of Montreal; London, England; Seattle University; Notre Dame, Indiana and Boston Institute of Medical Secretaries prepared her for a rich and varied ministry. Sister Mary Ellen's ministry in education - as a primary school teacher and then as a commercial teacher - took her to Vancouver, New Westminster and Kamloops (25 years), Nanaimo (9 years). In 1964, she joined the Faculty of the University of Notre Dame in Nelson where she taught Commerce preparing Medical Secretaries until 1976. Also in Nelson she served as Office Assistant and Secretary to the Board at Mount St. Francis Hospital. In 1978, Sister moved to Vancouver where she served as Bursar at Little Flower Academy for 19 years. In 1997, she moved to St. Ann's Residence in Victoria, where she continued to assist in the office and served as Bursar to the Sisters well after her 100th birthday. She was predeceased by her parents, William and Flora, siblings: Lily, John, Grace, Sadie, Wilfred, and Alexander who died in infancy. She is survived by her brother, Grant, generations of nieces and nephews, cousins, and her own community of Sisters of St. Ann. Prayers: 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 20, 2009 at St. Ann's Residence, 2474 Arbutus Road, Victoria, BC. The Mass of the Resurrection: 10:00a.m., Tuesday, July 21 also at St. Ann's Residence. Interment following at Hatley Memorial Gardens, Colwood, BC.
