->August 7, 2010, aged 71, died surrounded by her family following a recent illness. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, James; her sons, James (Wendy) of Blairstown, NJ, and David Malcolm (Christine) of Ontario, NY, and her daughters, Jennifer Moore Stahlkrantz (Per) of Pound Ridge, NY, and Eliza Moore (Tim Broshears) of Rochester; grandchildren, Andrew, Collin, James, Emma, Django, Harrison, Lindsay, Caleb, Hannah, Luke and William; her brother, David L. Mitchell of Albany, NY; her sister, Lynn Mitchell of Sarasota, FL; brothers-in-law, Eric (Janet) Moore of New Albany, IN, and Kenneth (Karolee) Moore of Scotia, NY; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.Born in Highland Park, MI, to David A.L. and Rita Mathews Mitchell, Shirley was raised in Delmar, NY, where she graduated from Bethlehem Central High School. After studying at Buffalo State Teachers College, she married Jim, her high school sweetheart, in 1961. Together, they moved to Rochester in 1966 and raised their four children in Irondequoit and Brighton.Shirley was a dedicated volunteer for WXXI, the Girl Scouts of the Genesee Valley, Third Presbyterian Church, the Memorial Art Gallery of the University of Rochester, Stars for Strong, and, most notably, for 25 years at the Wilmot Cancer Center of Strong Memorial Hospital. In 2006, Shirley received the Hattie Shumway Award for 20+ years of dedication and service to the Friends of Strong. "Volunteering with Shirley moved me and my heart. I saw how deeply one's own strength and compassion can touch another's life and cause a beautiful ripple effect," recalls Melinda Finn, a former Wilmot volunteer.A gracious, loyal and charitable woman, Shirley developed a wide and diverse circle of friends thanks to her varied interests in philanthropy, literature, the arts and international travel. But, her most remarkable dedication was to her family. She will be missed immeasurably by many.The family will receive friends to share memories TUESDAY, 1 - 4 & 7 - 9 PM at CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME (495 N. Winton Rd., between Browncroft & Humboldt). Memorial Service WEDNESDAY, 1 PM at Asbury First United Methodist Church (1050 East Ave.). Private interment Mt. Hope Cemetery.
