Shirley Mae Akins Smith, 75, of Tifton, departed from this world Monday, December 12, 2011. Ms. Smith was born in Bulloch County to John Doy Akins and Georgia Mae Dixon Akins. She graduated from Statesboro High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics from the University of Georgia. She worked as a county extension agent for Bulloch County with the 4-H program until her marriage to the late Dr. Don T. Smith. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Tifton. During her life in Tifton, she was active as a member of the Camellia Garden Club, involved in the local arts council and served her community by delivering Meals-On-Wheels and helping with Project Literacy. Ms. Smith is survived by two children, Kimberly Smith Sligh of Martinez, Georgia, and Don T. Smith Jr. of Tifton, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Nancy Ann Fulp Smith; four grandchildren, Anna Camille Sligh, Don Terrel Smith III, Hutton Alexander Smith and Greyson Elizabeth Smith; one sister, Fay Akins Morris; and her niece, Cynthia Fay Morris; special friends, Luther E. Wilhite of Chicago and the families of Olivia Magruder of Hephzibah, Georgia, and Nicole Eubanks of Augusta, Georgia. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro with the Reverend Oscar W. Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Bulloch Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be her first cousins, Bill Akins, David Akins, Donald Wayne Akins, Ed Akins, Paul S. Akins, Paul D. Akins Jr., Wendell Akins, Richard Cannon, Earl Edenfield, Carl Mallard and Hugh Mallard, and also Raymond Fulp of Tifton. Friends may sign the online register book at www.joineranderson.com.
