Allen was born to the late Willis R. Lawrence, Sr. and the late Sarah Patterson Lawrence in Evanston, Illinois on July 21, 1937. She was one of four children. Allen would earn degrees from Bennett College and Rutgers University. She retired as a librarian from Florida A&M University in 2004.Allen is survived by her sister, Essie Lawrence-McNeal of Philadelphia and three sons, Scott (Shauna) Allen, Rondall (Adrienne) Allen and Sheldon (Gena) Allen, their families and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Allen's funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 2, 2014 at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 1405 Melvin St., Tallahassee, 32301.The Wake will be held from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Strong & Jones Funeral Home, 551 W. Carolina St., Tallahassee, 32301. The Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will conduct an Omega Omega service from 7:30PM to 8:00PM during the Wake at Strong & Jones. Arrangements are provided by Strong & Jones Funeral Home.
