Sandra Lee Whittaker Dwyer, 65 DERRY, N.H., FORMERLY OF SANFORD -- Sandra L. Dwyer, 65, of Chester, N.H., died Aug. 2, 2009, at Parkland Medical Center in Derry, N.H. with her family by her side. She had been a resident of Chester for the past 19 years. She was born on June 13, 1944, in Sanford, the daughter of John and Barbara T. (Shepard) Whittaker and was a graduate of Sanford High School with the class of 1962. As a young teenager, Sandra was a member of the Glee Club and the Drama department. Following high school, Sandra began her studies in nursing and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. With an interest and love for the mature generation, Sandra worked as a supervisor in Geriatric's at the Sanford Nursing Home, then for many years on 3rd shift and the day shift at No. Berwick Nursing Home; now named Varney Crossing. While living in New Hampshire, Sandra was employed at Birchwood and retired from Colonial Poplin Nursing Home. While raising her family, she was a Den mother, Superintendent of Sunday School at the Methodist Church and an active member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Rainbow girls in Sanford. She had a wide range of hobbies and interests which included collecting porcelain dolls, gardening and her flower gardens. An example of her love, kindness and generosity was displayed each Halloween as Sandra would knit a pair of mittens for each child in the neighborhood for the trick-a-treat bag! She was proud of her Seamstress Diploma which stretched her imagination and creative nature. Sandra was an entrepreneur and owned SLD where she designed signs for homes and businesses. First and foremost was her devotion to her family. She enjoyed going to their camp at Wilson Lake and then at Mousam. Sandra enjoyed a hot cup of coffee and her special treat was always ice cream. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great joy and she was proud of their accomplishments. She had a great sense of humor and always put the needs of others before her own. She is survived by her mother, Barbara Whittaker of Sanford; her three children, Diane Knight of Alfred, Deborah Pelletier of Skowhegan and Douglas J. Elwell of Shapleigh; one step son, Chad T. Dwyer of Milwaukee, Wis.; three brothers, William Whittaker and Harry Whittaker both of Killeen, Texas, and John Whittaker of Sanford; one aunt, Violet Libby of Lebanon; seven grandchildren, Jason Knight and Jessica and Rebecca Knight, Stephanie LeClair, Katie and Bethany Jordan and William D. Elwell; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 16 years, David L. Dwyer; and by her brother, Norman Whittaker. Family and friends may call on Thursday, Aug. 6, from 4-8 p.m. at the Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak St., in Alfred. A funeral service will be held on Aug. 7, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Alfred Parish Church, 17 Kennebunk Rd., in Alfred with Pastor Rick Leach, officiating.
