Salvatore J. Wood Jr., 83, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2011, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at 9:15 a.m. in the McCriskin- Gustafson Home For Funerals, www.mccriskinfuneralhome.com, 2425 Plainfield Ave., South Plainfield, N.J. 07080 followed by a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Czestochowa R.C. Church, South Plainfield, N.J. Entombment services will follow at Holy Redeemer Cemetery Mausoleum, South Plainfield. Visitation is on Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home. Born and raised in Plainfield, N.J., Sal resided in the city for most of his life. He then resided in South Plainfield for several years and recently resided in Bonita Springs, Fla. Sal worked for HOB Chevrolet in North Plainfield, N.J., for over 20 years and then went into business for himself operating Sal's Corner Deli located in North Plainfield. Mr. Wood was a devout Catholic. He served as a Eucharistic minister for Sacred Heart R.C. Church in South Plainfield and was active with the Knights of Columbus. He served as past grand knight for the Watchung Council 552 and was a member of the South Plainfield Council 6203, Cranford Council 6226 and the Linden Council 2859. In 1977, he became grand knight for the Linden Council and continued to serve as their council advocate. Additionally, Sal was a past faithful navigator for the Watchung Assembly and a member of the Color Guard. A former treasurer of the Union County Federation, he was a district deputy for Union County and was named the district's 1970 "Deputy of the Year." In addition, Sal volunteered for 45 years at Runnells Specialized Hospital of Union County in Berkeley Heights, N.J., and was recognized for his years of service. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary. He leaves behind his children, Julia Wood and her husband, Dominick Verdic, of Scotch Plains, N.J.; Salvatore J. Wood III and his wife, Yolonda, of Florida; Chris and Sandra Wood of North Plainfield, and Jerry and Janet Wood of Bricktown, N.J.; his sister, Elizabeth Valente and her husband, Thomas, of Scotch Plains, N.J., and two brothers, Michael Wood and his wife, Jean, of Basking Ridge, N.J., and Frank Wood and his wife, Mary, of Plainfield. He is also survived by his adored grandchildren, Jason and Justin Wood and Catherine, Caroline and Colleen Verdic, and by several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Triboro Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 98, Seaside Park, N.J. 08752.
