Stephen Hayes, 86, of Deltona, passed away on June 22, 2010. He was born January 6, 1924. He was a Decorated War Veteran that served in the U.S. Marines and U.S. Army. Received Unit Citation; awarded the First Marine Division Reinforced for Service in Action Against the Enemy in the Soloman Islands and Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon Bar with one Bronze Star; Navy Unit Commendation awarded the Eleventh Marines for service in Action Against the Enemy at Cape Gloucester and Peleliu; Good Conduct Medal for service in the Marine Corps–1941-1945; American Defense Service Medal; received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars for participation in the Guadalcanal-Tulagi landings; capture and defense of Guadalcanal, Eastern New Guinea Operations and Bismark Archipelago Operation; the American Campaign Medal and Victory Medal for service during World War II. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers, Local 349 for 55 years. A member for 40 years of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Florida, Lodge 308 of South Miami. He loved to watch old westerns; was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Gloria Hayes; son, Jerry L. Hayes; four grandchildren, Patricia Hayes, Gregory Hayes, Melanie Hayes, Stephen C. Hayes; and four great-grandchildren, Stephen A. Hayes, Calen Hayes, Jacob Hayes and Travis Hayes. His sons, Clifford S. Hayes and Clayton E. Hayes, predeceased him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Private military service will be held at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell.
