SISTER YOLANDE (YISELLE) GIGUERE - WINOOSKI - Sister Yolande (Yiselle) Giguere, 93 years of age, died March 6, 2014, at Our Lady of Providence Residence in Winooski, at 3:45 a.m. Sister Giguere was born on March 29, 1920, in Gardner, Mass., the daughter of the late Oscar M. Giguere and Alberta Dorval. At the age of 15, she entered a boarding school in Canada and made friends with a young woman who later entered the Sisters of Providence novitiate in Montreal. Yolande (Yiselle) followed her a few years later, appreciating the fact that with the Sisters of Providence there would be a variety of ministry opportunities. Sister Yolande entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence on Feb. 26, 1943, and pronounced her perpetual vows on Feb. 28, 1946. Henceforth, she would be called Sister Paul Michael until the sisters returned to their legal names. She celebrated 70 years of religious life in 2013. In 1945, Sister Yolande began her ministry as a Sister of Providence working at the admissions desk at St. John of God Hospital in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. In her early years as a Sister, she earned a B.S. degree from the University of Montreal and a diploma in commercial studies. In 1947, she was asked to serve at Lewis Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Ill., where she ministered in the women's clinic and then in the business office where she worked for five more years. In 1952, she was called to serve at Maryville Academy, Des Plaines, Ill. In 1954, she returned to Montreal where she worked in the business office of St. God of John Hospital and Mont Providence Hospital for five years. Sister Yolande moved to St. Johnsbury Hospital in Vermont where she served as the treasurer and, in 1963, she came to St. Louis Convent (which was demolished in 1967) in Winooski, where she fulfilled the responsibilities of the treasurer for four years. In 1967, Sister Yolande returned to Montreal where she served for the next 26 in the office of the General Administration in a variety of capacities. In 1970, after a sabbatical year, she continued to serve in various departments of the Mother House of the Sisters of Providence. In I987, Sister Yolande and out-going Provincial Superior of St. Vincent de Paul Province, Sister Pauline Gamache, returned to the United States to minister with the New Hampshire Catholic Charities. They lived for four years with the Holy Cross Sisters in Manchester, N.H., and later moved into an apartment. For the next 13 years, Sister Yolande worked in the finance department of the New Hampshire office of Catholic Charities. In 2000, Sister Yolande returned to Winooksi and Our Lady of Providence, previously known as St. Louis Convent, where she carried out a ministry of service in the reception office, answering the telephone and receiving visitors and relatives of the residents. Sister Yolande is survived by her two sisters, Claire M. Boucher, and Germaine A. Field; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Dorval E. Giguere, and Paul E. Giguere; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday, March 10, 2014, at Our Lady of Providence chapel, 47 West Spring St., Winooski. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Providence chapel, with the Reverend Richard Lavalley, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Winooski, presiding. Interment will follow in the Sisters of Providence lot at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. Arrangements are being made by the LaVigne Funeral Home, 132 Main St., in Winooski.
