A member of the sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, NY, for the past 70 years, died on June 26, 2002 in St. Dominic's Convent, Blauvelt, New York. Sister was 85 years old. Sr. Paula was born to John Miller and Elizabeth Nesko Miller on April 5, 1917 in New York City. She entered the Sisters of St. Dominic on September 8, 1932 from the parish of St. Anselm, Bronx, New York. Sr. Paula received the Dominican Habit on March 7, 1933, professed her first vows on March 8, 1934 and her perpetual vows on April 22, 1938. Sr. Paula's many years of active ministry were devoted to the education of youth on the elementary and High School level. Sister taught in the following schools; Our Saviour School, 1934-1935; St. Benedict, 1935-1937, 1976-1996; St. Anselm, 1954-1958, all in the Bronx Holy Cross in Manhattan, 1948-1954 and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, Tappan, New York, 1972-1976. Sister Paula also taught in Providence, Rhode Island at St. Raymond's School, 1937-1942 and St. Pius School, 1942-1948; she taught in Florida at St. Paul's School, 1958-1959 and Father Lopez High School, 1959-1968 both of Daytona Beach. Sister also served as Principal in St. Anthony School, Oceanside, 1968-1972 and as Assistant Principal at St. Benedict School, 1996-2002 both in New York. Sister retired to St. Dominic Infirmary in May 2002 because of failing health and remained there until her death. In addition to her congregation, Sr. Paula is survived by her sisters Elizabeth and Jean Melanas of the Bronx, several cousins and many friends. She was predeceased by her brother John and sister Josie. Sr. Paula held the BA in Education from Teacher's College, Rhode Island and the MS in Administration from Fordham University, Bronx, New York. Relatives and friends may attend services at: Schuyler Hill Funeral Home, 3535 East Tremont Avenue, Bronx, on Friday June 28, from 3-5pm and 7-9pm. A Mass will be held at St. Benedict Church, Bronx on Saturday June 29, at 10:30AM. Services will also be held at St. Dominic's Convent, 496 Western Highway, Blauvelt, NY. Wake on Sunday, June 30, from 2-8PM. An Evening prayer will be held on Sunday at 5:30PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, July 1, at 10:30AM, burial immediately follow in St. Dominic Cemetery. Arrangements have been made by Schuyler Hill Funeral Home, Bronx, and Michael J. Higgins Funeral Home, New City. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Sisters of St. Dominic of Blauvelt, NY.
