YORK Sam W. Jones, age 93, of York, died Thursday, November 30, 2006 at Sumter Health and Rehabilitation, L.L.C. in York. Services will be held on Sunday, December 3, 2006 at 1:30 p.m. from York Baptist Church in York, Alabama. Rev. David Wilkinson, pastor of York Baptist Church will officiate the service. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in Pineapple, Alabama. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Bumpers Funeral Home of York, Alabama will be in charge of arrangements.A beloved coach, Mr. Jones worked for 39 years in the Alabama Public School System primarily as athletic director.He also served as Superintendent of Education for the Sumter County School System prior to his retirement in 1974.To acknowledge his accomplishments in the field of sports, Mr. Jones was selected to the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame.During his spare time off the playing field, Mr. Jones was an avid trainer for bird dogs and was a member of the Bird Dog Foundation.Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Marguerite Dixon Jones.Pallbearers will be former students of Mr. Jones. The Deacons of York Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
