Ruth Greenwood Smith, age 99, died September 6, 2014 at The Terraces in Orleans. Ruth was born to Fred and Edith Annie Clough Greenwood in Methuen, MA. Her father, mother and maternal grandfather emigrated from England to America in 1904, and Ruth loved her English roots. She married Russell E. Smith on December 26, 1938, one year after graduating from the Lawrence General Hospital School of Nursing. They lived in Philadelphia while Russell attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. They lived in Littleton and then Haverhill, Massachusetts, during Russells private veterinary practice years and then Pelham, Massachusetts, when Russell became professor of veterinarian medicine at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. During that time Ruth was a mother, vets assistant, and head teacher / assistant director at the universitys childhood development laboratory and nursery school. She also volunteered as a docent at the Historic Deerfield Museum. Together they were pillars of their church. When Russell retired in 1977, they moved to their family vacation home in Orleans. On Cape Cod, Ruth volunteered with The Head Start program, The Federated Church of Orleans and The Orleans Community Exchange. Ruth is survived by three sons, Stephen E. Smith (Deede Smith) of Stillwater, Minnesota, David Smith-Greenwood (Coleen Maloney) of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Robert F. Smith (Patti Smith) of Harwich Port, Massachusetts, 5 g randchildren and 11 great- grandchildren. Her husband Russell E. Smith died in 2008. They were married for almost 70 years.
