Ruth 'Penny' Pennington Palmer HAMILTON - Ruth "Penny" Pennington Palmer, 88, of Hamilton passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2013, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Langhorne, PA. Born in Orange, Mrs. Palmer was raised in the Vailsburg section of Newark, and was educated in the Newark School System. While waiting to be accepted into the U.S. Cadet Nursing Program at Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing she worked for the American Life Insurance Company. After graduating from the Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, she received her degree as a registered nurse and later returned to college and received her B.A. degree from Trenton State College. Mrs. Palmer was invited to the Panama Canal Zone with her brother and sister-in-law where she was later employed by the Panama Canal Company Hospital. She later met and married her husband, John S. Palmer, and lived there for 5-1/2 years until their son, Jon Leigh Palmer, was born. Upon returning to the United States, the Palmers moved to Blackwood, NJ, until they purchased their home in Mercerville in 1954. Mrs. Palmer was employed with the Trenton Board of Education as a registered nurse for 20 years before her retirement in 1990. She was a member of the Union Methodist Church, where she was president of its Women's Society, and later became a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, Hamilton Square, where she was very active. Mrs. Palmer volunteered for Mobile Meals of Hamilton for 20 years and was a member of the Orange Memorial Hospital Alumni, the Trenton State Alumni, and the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in the field of education. She was also a life member of several nursing and educational organizations. Predeceased by her parents, Harry L. and Sara Ward (Hauss) Pennington; her husband, John Stanley Palmer; her son, Jon Leigh Palmer; her brother and sister, Richard and Katherine Pennington, and her nephew, Richard L. Pennington Jr., she is survived by her friends, Nelson and Elizabeth Guenther of Port Charlotte, FL, and Alan and Judy Lavery of Lambertville; her "adopted son", Harold Biddulph of Hamilton; her two nieces, Katherine Bassett of Texas and Connie Pennington of Oregon, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Saint Mark United Methodist Church, 465 Paxson Ave., Hamilton Square, NJ, with the Reverend Robert Marks, Pastor, officiating. Entombment will be private. There will be no calling hours.
