Ruth Simkin Retired School Teacher Age 93 passed away Saturday, December 30, 2000 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, James J. Gallo on January 17, 1995. Surviving are: nephew, William E. (Lorraine) Parker (Son) of Lowman; grandchildren, Ann (Randy) Brewer, their children Eric and Emily of Lawrenceville, PA, Mary (Troy) Tobey of Lowman; special daughter and son-in-law, Leona Ochab (Duane) Potter of Jessup, MD; grandson, Ron (Julie) Potter of Columbia, MD; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Derek and Kaitlin Potter; granddaughter, Carol (Karl) Smith of Laurel, MD; great-grandchildren, Cristyane, Jonathan and Matthew Lamastra; nephew, Robert (Phyllis) Parker and their daughter Linda; niece, Eloise (H. Ward) Hill; their children, Virginia (Ted) Hildbrant their son Phillip, John (Joan) Hill; brothers, Allen (Eleanor) Simkin of Chemung, NY, William Simkin of Bath, NY; numerous other nieces and nephews. Also surviving are Sharon (James) Reynolds of Elmira, Malcolm (Hilda) Dwyer of Horseheads, Lauren (Colleen) Simkin of Erin, Shirley (Will) Bradt of Florida; foster children, Nancy (Charles) Trim of Horseheads, Maureen (Fred) Lincoln of Albany; and several other foster children. She was also predeceased by a foster son, Lloyd Ochab. Ruth was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Maple Ave., Elmira, where she served as Clerk for 52 years. She taught for 40 years in the public school system, retiring in 1969 from the Elmira City School District. She was a member of the area retired school teachers association. Ruth was an avid historian. Her main interest in life encompassed her home and family and she especially enjoyed entertaining them. Family and friends are invited to call Tuesday, January 2, 2001 from 6 to 8 PM. at the Olthof Funeral Home, 1050 Pennsylvania Ave, Elmira. The funeral and committal service will be held Wednesday at 2 PM at the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 813 Maple Ave. Elmira with H. Ward Hill officiating. Interment will be in Chemung Cemetery, Chemung, NY at the convenience of the family.
