Ruth L. (Stephens) Smith, 89, of Hanover, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Philadelphia, Pa., Suncook, N.H., Westfield, Hanover and Aurora, Colo., died July 24, 2011, at the Brookshire House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Denver after a prolonged battle. Ruth succumbed to Alzheimer's. Daughter of the late William and Florence (Gregory) Stephens, Ruth was born June 5, 1922, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., where she was raised and educated. Ruth was a homemaker known for her love of home, friends, gardening and a beautiful yard. She was a Patriots and Bruins fan. She loved ice cream, sweets, cigarettes and her cats. Ruth was the wife of the late Max J. Smith and is survived by her children, Gregory S. Smith of Fall River and his former wife Cathy Talford of Pembroke, N.H., Ronald J. Smith and his former wife Ronda of Fremont, Neb., and present wife Donna of Aurora, Colo. Ruth also leaves her younger brother, Robert Stephens of Anchorage, Alaska. She was the grandmother to eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Jim Drury. Services were held Sept. 24, in the Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington St., Hanover. Interment for both Ruth and Max followed at the Hanover Center Cemetery. Donations in Ruth's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
