WALLINGFORD - Ruth L. (Brown) Johnson, daughter of the late Louis C. Brown and Gertrude Brown of New Haven passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2009 at Masonic HealthCare Center after a long illness. Before moving to Masonic, Ruth lived at Hamlet Manor condominiums in Wallingford for several years. Ruth was born March 28, 1925, and lived in New Haven, having grown up in an apartment at the Goffe Street armory where her father worked as the building superintendent. From the inside balcony in the armory, she enjoyed the best view in the house - watching marching bands, soldiers' drills, and entertainment by some of the best musical groups of the 40's. She attended the old Hillhouse High School. At the time of her death, Ruth was 84 years old. She was a parishioner of Most Holy Trinity Church. In 1953, Ruth and her husband, William H. Johnson, also of New Haven, moved to Wallingford to one of the earliest sections of Ridgeland on Ridgeland Circle. There Ruth raised six of her seven children. Ruth's last child was born when the family moved to Center Street. Two years later the family moved to Christian Street where they lived for many years. Ruth's special talent involved the coordination of fashions and accessories. She was always a sharp dresser and applied this talent working at several women's clothing stores including Raymond's in Wallingford and Lucy Baltzel and Jean Hutchinson in Hamden. Ruth fondly remembered the great fun and friends of Ridgeland, the Wallingford Country Club and the South Main Street gang. Those social gatherings and the fun on "the hill" were probably the happiest days of her life. Ruth loved the beauty and solace she found in visiting Hammonassett Beach and Hubbard Park. Ruth is survived by her husband, William H. Johnson; her seven children, Noelle Johnson, William (Chip) Johnson Jr. and Claudia Johnson of Wallingford, Cyndi Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla., Nancy (and Mel) Hook of Westfield, Mass., Clayton (and Pam) Johnson of Meriden, and Trudi (and Gary) Borkowski of Branford. Her grandchildren include, Ryan Etterman of Portland, Randy and Kevin Johnson of Wallingford, Cyndi Tencza of West Palm Beach, Fla., Kate Tencza of Los Angeles, Calif., Jeffrey Kippur of Jacksonville, Fla., Lindsay and Kathryn Kippur of Live Oak, Fla., Sarah Johnson of Westfield, Mass., Craig and Spencer Johnson of Meriden and Amy and Lauren Borkowski of Branford; she is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Ruth was predeceased by a brother, Edward Brown; and two sisters, Eleanor Gettings of New Haven and Gertrude Wreiden of Syracuse, N.Y. Her family will receive relatives and friends Sunday, Dec. 6 from 1 until 4 p.m. in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St. Ext. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Sunday at 4 p.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care, 33 N. Plains Industrial Road., Wallingford, CT 06492. www.wallingfordfh.com
