ROCHESTER ; Ruth Martin Keans, 80, of Walnut Street, Rochester, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008, at Frisbie Memorial Hospital. She was surrounded by her family.Born June 13, 1928, in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Frederick Martin. Her family moved to Belmont, Mass., when she was a young child, and Belmont is where she spent her youth.Ruth was a graduate of Bates College, Class of 1950. She continued her education at Simmons College, where she received her degree as a physical therapist. Ruth worked at many hospitals in the Boston area as a physical therapist, often with children and adults stricken with polio.Ruth and her family moved to Rochester in 1960. She became an active member of the Rochester Community until her death. Ruth was a former volunteer for Strafford County Hospice and an active member of Victims Inc. She served on the board of Frisbie Memorial Hospital, as well as the Hospital's Auxiliary. She also spent time as a consultant for the Rochester Visiting Nurses Association.Ruth's greatest accomplishment was the work she did during her time as a physical therapist at the Rochester Child Development Center, working with special-needs children and families. She was instrumental in improving the quality of their lives. Ruth had many interests but her true joy came from time spent at the beach with her family and working in her garden.Survivors include three children, Bethany D. Keans of Lyndonville, Vt., Stephany A. Keans of Manlius, N.Y., and F. Martin Keans of East Kingston, and his wife, Patricia; four grandchildren, Jennifer Martin and Christopher Charles Merrihew of Manlius, N.Y., and Abigail Rose and Lily Ann Keans of East Kingston.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SHARE Fund of Rochester or to the Homeless Shelter of Strafford County.Calling hours will be held Tuesday, Oct. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with funeral services to be held at 1 p.m. in the chapel of the R.M.
