CARPENTER--Ruth C. The Brearley School community deeply mourns the passing of Ruth C. Carpenter, a master teacher at the School who was a member of the English Department from 1960 to 2000 and its Head from 1965 to 1978 and from 1982 to 1988. Ruth was a brilliant teacher who passed onto generations of Brearley girls her passion for English literature. Her extraordinary ability, unaided by notes, to weave great swaths of Donne, Shakespeare and Milton into her lectures convinced students of the beauty of language and the glamour of literature. Many went into the world thinking of Donne or Hamlet as an elegantly dressed, animated woman with a slightly southern accent, as was Ruth. As a colleague and mentor to younger members of the department, Ruth was always interested, kind and generous. Her great gifts live on in both how and what we teach in the English Department. Brearley joins in sending sincere condolences to Ruth's many loving friends.
