BRYANT, RUTH BOOKER, 89, of Louisville, passed away March 7, 2013. Her husband, Roscoe C. Bryant Jr., M.D., preceded her in death. She was an inspiring strong woman who exemplified for all of us great hope for change in society. She is survived by her daughters Vicki C. Bryant, Esq., Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton and Peggy Hill; son Roscoe C. Bryant, III, Esq., (Jennifer); her four grandchildren Christopher and Damien Bryant and Victoria and William Hamilton III, and sister Beverly Cumbo. She leaves a proud legacy with her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Mrs. Bryant was inducted into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame in 2003, and received the Carl and Anne Braden Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011, for her lifetime of activism in the Louisville Civil Rights Movement. She was a member of the West End Community Council, cofounder and president of the Women United for Social Action, founder of the Black Unity League of Kentucky in 1968, and an active participant in the public accommodations demonstrations and Open Housing Campaign. Mrs. Bryant was a housing developer and built bridges with her company, Booker Bryant and Assoc. As a pioneer practicing Buddhist member of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) of Kentucky and Women's Division Leader, she sought and worked for world peace starting in her community. Ruth Bryant cared deeply about the plight of the less fortunate, and has truly been a friend and advocate for civil and human rights.
