She was born Aug. 6, 1907, in Pine Apple, Ala., to John Wesley and Georgia Emily Merriwether Craft. Ruby Mae shared a common ancestry with Captain Meriwether Lewis, co-commander of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (famous for exploring the Northwest Territory). Her family moved to Jay in 1917 and were charter members of Pine Level Baptist Church near Jay in 1927. She taught the second grade in the elementary school in Jay. In 1931 she came to Tallahassee to enroll at Florida State College for Women. On June 2, 1932, she married J.T. Williams Sr. and they lived in the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Rugeley on College Avenue. They joined the Rugeleys and the Rev. Waldo Wood in feeling that Tallahassee needed another Baptist church. They thought the new church should be called Immanuel, meaning "God with us." So, on February 10, 1935, the mission-minded group held its first meeting as Immanuel Baptist Church at the corner of St. Augustine and South Boulevard streets.Ruby Mae and J.T. were two of the 35 charter members. Today, Tallahassee has 50 Baptist churches in the Florida Baptist Association. Ruby Mae, J.T., and their four children were active in all the programs of the church. Ruby Mae taught a Sunday school class until she was 90 and was active in WMU. She enjoyed going on mission trips and witnessing at the county jail and nationally with the Bill Glass Prison ministries. For many years she sponsored children through the World Vision Program. Over the years she opened their home to relatives and friends who were coming to Tallahassee for school or employment. Some of those were Carroll Lamb, Nettie Earnest and Susan Newsome. Ruby Mae and J.T. owned the Public Bookkeeping Service at 831 W. St. Augustine St. and, through their business, taught their children good work ethics. She helped her husband as he served on the Tallahassee City Commission and as mayor from 1953 to 1956. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Tallahassee and served as Worthy Matron of Chapter No. 119. Ruby Mae owned AAA Realty from 1964 to 1986. She participated in the many facets of residential real-estate development, including construction, financing and brokerage. In 1974 the city of Tallahassee purchased the property where Immanuel was located to build the Civic Center. Immanuel Baptist was moved to 2351 Mahan Drive, where a beautiful facility was built and is still growing and winning people to the Lord. Ruby Mae was "Mama" to her family and it was a delight to visit her and receive a big hug. She always had time to listen to them and love them, as they shared their joys and sorrows. She encouraged them to do their best for their Lord and they knew that they were always in her prayers. She was a blessing to her family and the people she led to the Lord over the years. Survivors include a son, J.T.
