Funeral service for Ruby L. Harris, missionary, humanitarian, education advocate and songbird of the South, who died in Miami Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, after a long illness, will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct 1, at Gamble Memorial Church of God in Christ, 1898 NW 43rd St., Miami. Visitation will be Friday from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Richardson's Funeral Home, Miama. For over 80 years Missionary Harris shared God's message through her melodic voice and life's work. She traveled whenever and where called, sharing her message through soulful, traditional gospel song. She was the last surviving member of the original Malone Gospel Singers. She attended Volusia County Public Schools and received her ninth grade diploma from DeLeon Springs Colored Schools in 1932. She graduated from Bronson High School in DeLand. She was church secretary of Mt. Zion AME Church in DeLeon Springs at the age of 12. In 1946, she joined the Church of God in Christ and was a pioneer member of Malone Institutional. She was always a faithful and loyal shepherd for Christ. In 1992, she moved to Miami. Among her many relatives, local survivors include Irene Gilmore and Mayetta Peacock, both of DeLand; Althea Harris and Annie Mae Graham, DeLeon Springs; Inez Harris, James Harris and Peaches Harris, Green Cove Springs; Ernest Harris, DeLand; Richard and Angela Graham, DeLeon Springs; Sylvia Johnson and Loretta Lee, St. Petersburg; Jeanette and Annette Graham; Wright Harris, Miami; and Ray Anthony Gibson, DeLand.
