JOHNSON Rosa Tisdale, age 92, was born on February 23, 1912, to the late Charles and Peachie Wilburn in Scottsville, Pa. On Friday, June 4, 2004, at 5:23 p.m., she went home to be with the Lord, at Cambridge Manor, Fairfield. She was the eldest child and had three sisters and eight brothers, all but one predeceased her. When she was very young, her family moved to Chase City, Va., where she attended Chase City Grade School and Thyne Institute. As a child, she joined Lone Oak Baptist Church in Chase City. She married the late James B. Tisdale around 1931. To this union two sons were born. Her youngest son, James Tisdale predeceased her. Around 1942, Rosa and her family relocated to Bridgeport. She was a housewife and mother, who did domestic work outside of her home as well. In the early 60's she married the late Stepney Johnson. Together they owned and operated Johnson's Refreshment Stand. Her Texas-style hotdogs were known far and wide. She and her husband, Stepney spent their winters in Florida, where she had many friends and extended family. Soon after her arrival to Connecticut, she joined Mt. Aery Church where she was a faithful member until her husband's illness made it difficult for her to attend. For several years she attended Rainbow Chapel located on blocks from her home. About two years ago, she joined Messiah Baptist Church and attended regularly until her recent illness. Rosa had a willing spirit and helped many families and churches throughout the community. She opened her home to many family members and friends who relocated to the area or just needed someplace to stay for a while. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt, mother-in-law and friend. She loved her sons and many sacrifices to provide for them. She sold homemade rolls and dinners, as well as crocheted pocketbook and afghans to help pay for their education. She was an independent woman, who was able to live alone and care for herself until she became ill in January. She will be missed by her family, friends and neighbors. Only three weeks prior to her death, she was predeceased by her daughter-in-law, Jettie S. Tisdale. She leaves to cherish her memory sons, Charles B. Tisdale and Jeffrey B. (Deborah) Tisdale, all of Bridgeport; one brother, Grover Hatcher of Boydton, Va.; sisters-in-law, Grace Hatcher and Louise Tisdale, of Chase City, Va., Nan Tisdale of Bridgeport, Rosa Lee Hatcher of Richmond, Va., and Louise Stevens of New Jersey; a devoted daughter-in-law, Loyce Tisdale of Trumbull; grandchildren, Preston (Maria) Tisdale and Maisa Tisdale, both of Trumbull, and Stacey Tisdale (Chris Gatty) of Stamford; great-grandchildren, Kamilah, Alanna and Imani Tisdale and Royce and Rasheen Patton; and several nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and her Pokeno Club members. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at Messiah Baptist Church, 210 Congress Street, Bridgeport, at 10 a.m. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of services at Messiah Baptist Church. Interment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery, Bridgeport. Arrangements entrusted to Baker-Isaac Funeral Services, 985 Stratford Avenue, Bridgeport.
