RODDENBERRY Gladys Davis Roddenberry, age 84, passed away on April 13, 2009 in Jacksonville, Florida. She was born in Pierce County, Georgia in 1925. She graduated from Patterson High School, Patterson, Georgia; she graduated first in her class from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Georgia; and she received a Masters in Elementary Education from the University of Florida. She was married to Harry Roddenberry for 62 years and during their married years lived in New Mexico, Illinois, Panama Canal Zone, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, North Carolina and Florida. Together they moved to Jacksonville, Florida in 1954 where she taught elementary school in the Duval County Public Schools system for 38 years. She was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, a member of Ortega United Methodist Church, and will be remembered for her love of learning, her passion for teaching and her commitment to the field of education. She is survived by her husband Harry of Jacksonville, her sons and daughters-in-law Stephen and Bonnie of Miami and John and Rita of Bradenton, and daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Thomas Scanlon of Orlando. In addition, she is survived by eleven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM on Wednesday, April 15 at Ortega United Methodist Church, 4807 Roosevelt Blvd, Jacksonville, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in her memory be sent to Ortega United Methodist Church, or to the University of North Florida Foundation designated to the Gladys Roddenberry Graduate Fellowships for Teaching Excellence, 1 UNF Drive, Suite 9/2543, Jacksonville, FL, 32224, which annually awards fellowships to four talented teachers who wish to pursue a master's degree in education.
