COLUMBIA - Robin Michael Carter, 62, died peacefully in his home in Columbia, SC, November 1, 2008, under the care of Palmetto Health Hospice for advanced kidney cancer. He was born in Miami Beach, FL, November 15, 1945, to Horace Carter and Geraldine Burns Carter Re, both deceased.He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Caroline Merriam Eastman of Columbia, SC; his sisters, Patty Senter and her husband Guy of Beaufort, NC, and Janice Evans and her husband John of Donnelsville, OH; and his brother John of Oneonta, NY. Survivors also include his sister-in-law Parmelee Eastman of Wellesley, MA, and his brother-in-law Roger Eastman and his wife Michele of Columbia, MD, and many beloved nieces and nephews.Robin spent his childhood years in Virginia and Ohio, graduating in 1963 from Euclid High School in Ohio. He graduated from Harvard College in 1967, and received a doctorate in anthropology from Duke University. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. Most of his working career was spent as a computer systems analyst and programmer. Robin was a passionate birder and nature sound recorder who could often be found in the early morning listening to the sounds of Congaree Swamp. He led field trips in all parts of South Carolina, including the continuing series of Dawn Chorus walks at the National Park. The University of South Carolina Press published his book, Finding Birds in South Carolina, in 1993. He was an active member and officer of Columbia Audubon Society, Friends of Congaree Swamp, and the Carolina Bird Club. Memorials in his honor may be made to these organizations or other charity of your choice. A memorial service is being planned. Arrangements are with Barr-Price Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
