Roberta Louise Bennett, 85, of Union City, Ind., passed away Thursday night, Oct. 31, 2013 at Pine Knoll Rehabilitation Center, Winchester, from complications of metastasized breast cancer. She was born Aug. 25, 1928 in Greenville, Ohio, to the late Roy and Cuba Kester. Roberta graduated from Greenville High School in 1946 and received her B.S. and Masters degrees in Elementary Education from Ball State University in 1950 and 1964. She began teaching in Union City in her own basement on the corner of Oak and High with a nursery school and then finished her career with 30 years of teaching kindergarten. She had a vibrant love of music and the arts with which she filled her life and classrooms. Known as the "Energizer Bunny," Roberta was extremely community service oriented. She loved her Union City! She worked on the City Council, Beautification Committee, Art Association, YMCA Board, Park Board, Youth Salute Selection Committee, Share The Arts Program Coordinator, Voting Precinct Volunteer,and was a sorority member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Delta Theta Tau, and Alpha Chi Omega. She single-handedly championed the campaign for the Jeremiah Smith monument to be built on the library lawn to honor the founder of Union City. Roberta was a very talented musician. She played the cello, bass and guitar and sang in a professional singing group called The Triads. She was a loving and loyal member of the First Christian Church for more than 60 years where she was always involved with the choirs and musical directing. She was also a very skilled and sought after "teeth puller." Her favorite pasttimes included world traveling, Over the Teacup Book Club and sharing her extensive home library, fishing, cross country skiing, crossword puzzles, games of all kinds, quilting, sewing costumes, lake time, flowers and sitting on her front porch. A joyous, enthusiastic community leader; a proud, loving, supportive mother, wife and grandmother; a tireless volunteer; and a beautiful, talented friend; she is cherished and will be so missed. Survivors include four daughters, Beth Bennett, Becky Bennett, Louise Lingner (Terry) and Carol Jenkinson; four grandsons, Carson Jenkinson, Taylor Jenkinson, Christopher Lingner and Cory Lingner; two sisters, Marilee Stites (Jim) and Carol Certain (Ron) and their families.She was preceded in death by her parents; and her loving husband of 62 years, Gene R. Bennett. The family will conduct a memorial service to celebrate Roberta's life Saturday, November 16 at 1 p.m. at First Christian Church, 422 W. Oak St., Union City, Ind. Memorial contributions may be made in Roberta's name in lieu of flowers to: The Randolph County YMCA or The Foundation of Randolph County, 213 South Main St., Winchester, IN 47394 with a notation that says: "Roberta Bennett Memorial Scholarship."
