Robert W. Stephens, 83, of Holland Township, N.J., died on Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, at his home. A memorial service will be held at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, 1 E. Oak St., Basking Ridge, N.J., on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m. Private interment will take place at Bedminster Reformed Church Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Layton Funeral Home, 475 Main St., Bedminster, N.J. Mr. Stephens was born in Plainfield, N.J., on Nov. 23, 1927, a son of the late William H. and Mildred Kaufmann Stephens. He had resided in Far Hills, N.J., before moving to Holland Township in 1977, Mr. Stephens served with the Merchant Marines during the end of World War II from 1945 to 1946. He was president and owner/operator of R. W. Stephens, Inc,. a swimming pool maintenance and sporting goods store in Bernardsville and Far Hills for 18 years, retiring in 1983. Mr. Stephens previously worked as an oil burner serviceman for L. V. Ludlow in Far Hills. He was a member of the Far Hills - Bedminster Fire Department, having joined in October 1951, and served as chief from 1967 to 1969. He was a former member of the Bedminster - Far Hills Lions Club. Mr. Stephens was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Poulson Stephens in 1958; his second wife, Rosemarie Dezutti Stephens, in 1971, and by his present wife, Susanna Janes Stephens, on the same day, Nov. 3, 2011. Mr. Stephens is survived by four sons, William R. of Bedminster, R. Thomas of Frenchtown, N.J., Frederick J. of Far Hills, and John W.of Hampden, Maine; a daughter, Maureen Ann Stephens of Providence, R.I.; two step sons, Donald F. Bergenty of Delray Beach, Fla., and Peter V. Bergenty of Bridgewater, N.J.; a step daughter, Lisa Bergenty Bongardt of Arlington, Va.; a sister, Ruth Ward of Staunton,Va; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Far Hills - Bedminster Fire Department, P. O. Box 431, Far Hills, N.J. 07931, or the Hunterdon Animal Shelter, 576 Stamets Rd., Milford, N.J. 088478.
