-> Robert "Bob" Merritt Dale, 86, died Friday, June 20, 2003 at St. Josephs/Candler Hospital in Savannah. Bob was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on April 2, 1917 to John Irvin and Eddie Young Dale. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1947, serving in North Africa and France. Bob spent most of his working years in New York City, commuting to the suburbs, where his hobbies at that time included woodworking. He specialized in school room and grandfather clocks. He was responsible for a great many innovations in the apparel industry, which was his true love, and had great expertise in the manufacturing of mens shirts. At the time of his retirement in 1983, he was Vice President of Acquisitions at Cluett Peabody and Company, Inc. Bob was very involved in civic activities up until his death. He was a past President of the Skidaway Kiwanis Club and was dedicated to the Kiwanis principles. He generously gave his time to numerous foundations in his chosen field and was honored on many occasions. He retired to Skidaway Island where he enjoyed golf several times a week, as well as making use of the local library because of his love of reading. He was a dedicated family man who enjoyed spending time with all members of his family. He leaves his wife, Virginia Mann Dale; children, Russell Edward Dale of Marietta, Sylvia Reese of Darien, Conn., Charles Wood of Dalton, and Suzanne Marsh of Duluth; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Elizabeth and Wade McCurry of Macon; grandchildren, Doug Dale, Kim McSwain, Shelby White, Elizabeth Dodge, and Scott Zimels; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Nicholas, and Sabrina Dale and Lea McSwain. Memorial Service: 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 23 at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church with Dr. John Wall officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Remembrances: Skidaway Island Village Library; Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church; or a charity of the donors choice.
