<!-- FH = Pensacola Memorial Gardens Funeral Home --><!-- DisplayFullObituaryText -->ROBERT LEE"BOB" STEPHENSSeptember 20, 1931- August 9, 2014Robert Stephens, 82, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 9th.He was a wonderful man to all that he encountered in his life, especially his family and close friends.Robert was preceded in death by his father, Tillman R. Stephens, his mother, Mary Elizabeth Johnson-Stephens, and his brothers, George L. Stephens and Louis T. Stephens.He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Bettie J. Stephens, his sister, Ann (Tom) Flanagan of Gulf Breeze, his children, R. Timothy (Marla) Stephens of Houston, TX, Linda L. Stephens, T. Reed (Karen) Stephens, and M. Kevin (Janet) Stephens, all of Pensacola. He also leaves behind two granddaughters, three grandsons, six great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, as well as multiple nieces, nephews and cousins.Robert was born to Tillman R. and Mary E. Johnson-Stephens in the southern part of Escambia County, Alabama. He was a graduate of Tate High School, and a member of Tate Over 50's organization. He also attended PJC and East Carolina College. He was a deacon at Lakeview Baptist Church in Pensacola. He served proudly in the Marine Corps for 21 years, retiring as a Gunnery Sargent. He also retired after 22 years with the Escambia County Sheriff's Dept. at the rank of Sargent. Robert was also a member and 33rd Degree Mason and member of the Scottish Rite (Hadji). While serving in the US Marine Corps he served in Korea and Vietnam. Bob was a real hero having saved five people from drowning on Pensacola Beach, a fellow Marine who had been electrocuted in Okinawa, and another fellow marine (while serving in reconnaissance) who had been caught under a rubber boat. He was a Communicator throughout his military career, while with the Sheriff's Department, and on patrol and investigations. While working for the Sheriff's Department, he worked as a sniper, and had the honor to protect and guard two US Presidents. He also served on the SWAT Team and was an instructor at the gun range.Evangelist Wade Ivey, nephew of Robert and Bettie, along with Brother Charles Mitchell, will be officiating the service. Services will be held on Friday, August 15th, at 11:30 am at Lakeview Baptist Church on Michigan Ave. in Pensacola.
