JOHNSON, Robert "Bob," 66, a longtime Lakeland coach and athlete, died Wednesday,March 22, 2006, at Heritage Springs/ Trinity Golf Retirement Community in New Port Richey. He and his wife, Mary Lynn, have lived in Trinity at Heritage Springs Golf Community since 1999 after 12 years in New Orleans, La., three years in Edison, N.J., and 37 years in Lakeland. Bob was born and lived in Cape Cod, Mass., until he was in the ninth grade when his family moved to Lakeland. He was a letterman athlete in several sports at Lakeland High School, and played college football in Kansas and at the University of Tampa. He played quarterback for the semi-professional Florida Brahmans in the North American Football League in the late 60s. Mr. Johnson was co-founder and head football coach of the Lakeland Lumberjack Youth Football Organization for 13 years from the early 60s to mid 70s and coached in Lakeland's Little League baseball program during this same time frame. He touched the lives of over 2000 youngsters between the ages of 9 and 13 in the Lakeland area. Bob was the chairman of the Cleveland Height Golf ' Country Club in the late 70s and was an accomplished golfer before enduring a number of back and hip surgeries in his later years. Bob was an original season ticket holder of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and never missed a game for over 10 years. Mr. Johnson was a human resources manager and had primary responsibilities for labor relations with W.R. Grace and Co. and America Cyanamid Co. from 1960 to 1985. He then became the regional labor relations manager for Cytec Industries and was based in New Orleans with responsibility for 11 plant locations throughout the southeast. He retired in 1999. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lynn, at home; two sons, John of Lakeland and Jim of St. Petersburg; one grandson; and three brothers, Thomas and Dennis of Lakeland, and Peter of Houston, Texas. A gathering of friends will take place 10-11 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at Trinity Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, New Port Richey, with a service of remembrance to start at 11:15 a.m. Cremation will follow at Trinity Memorial Gardens.
