Robert Edward Smith, 78, Punta Gorda, died May 24, 2002. He was born Nov. 13, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and came to the Charlotte County area 14 years ago from Levittown, N.Y. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and worked as a tank and pump mechanic for an oil distributor. He was a member of American Legion Post 110 in Port Charlotte; Deep Creek Elks 2763; Moose Lodge 1693 in Punta Gorda; Eagles Aerie 3296; Knights of Columbus Holy Innocents Council 3581 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9592, both in Levittown; USS Essex CV9 Association; and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 82 in Port Charlotte. He was a member of San Antonio Catholic Church of Port Charlotte. Survivors include his wife, Grace F.; son Donald J. of Farmingdale, N.Y.; daughters Karen J. of Falls Church, Va., and Kim J. of Baltimore; and two grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be at 10:45 a.m. Saturday at San Antonio Catholic Church in Port Charlotte. At noon Saturday, there will be an Elks service combined with an American Legion 110 service hosted by the Deep Creek Elks 2763, 1133 Capricorn Blvd., Port Charlotte. Paul Schelm Funeral Home in Port Charlotte is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Robert E. Smith to the National WWII Memorial Fund, P.O.
