WILMOT -- Robert E. Lee, 80, of Kearsarge Valley Road, died May 8, 2008, at New London Hospital.He was born in Stoneham, Mass., on Feb. 6, 1928, the son of Hiram and Lily (Letteny) Lee.Mr. Lee spent his early years in Stoneham, Holton, Maine, and Woburn, Mass., before moving to Wilmot in 1946.Mr. Lee served in the U.S. Army.He did many jobs, including working in the woods, at the tannery, and in the construction and building industry. He worked for the Town of New London at the landfill and transfer station from 1976 to 1998. His young friends would like to take a ride to the transfer station where they would receive a treat from "The Lollipop Man" and his canine friends would enjoy a dog bone. In retirement, Mr. Lee worked with his son-in-law, D.W. Atwood and Son, until 2006.His wife owns and operates Forest Cone and Evergreen Shop and Mr. Lee would make deliveries, becoming known as "The Flower Man." He was the oldest living member of the Wilmot Fire Department, serving for more than 62 years. Mr. Lee was a deputy forest fire warden for many years.He enjoyed family get-togethers.The family includes his wife of 60 years, Marilyn (Bacon) Lee of Wilmot; a son, Richard E. Lee of Wilmot; a daughter, Robin Atwood of Wilmot; three grandchildren; a brother, Emery Lee of Saucier, Miss.; three sisters, Grace Cicchetto of Saucier, Miss., and Mary Suitor and Eleanor Schools, both of Holton, Maine; and many beloved nieces and nephews.SERVICES: Calling hours are Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Chadwick Funeral Home, 235 Main St., New London. A graveside service is Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Pine Hill Cemetery, Wilmot. Flowers are acceptable. Memorial donations may be made to Wilmot Fire Department, P.O. Box 33, Wilmot 03287.
