CAWSEY, Robert Allan November 11, 1922 - March 3, 2004 On March 3, 2004, The Honorable Robert Allan Cawsey, Q.C. (Retired Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench) passed away in Edmonton, Alberta. Allan is survived by his loving wife Phyllis, five children, Clint Cawsey, Roberta Corbett (Tom), Dale Cawsey (Brenda), Jane Somerville (Dale), and Carolyn Pinsent (Joe). He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Robb Corbett (Nicole), Heather Corbett (Chris), Patrick and Hannah Cawsey, Catherine and Claire Somerville, Jolene and Mitchell Pinsent, Ferra and Thea McCaffery and great grandson Elias Corbett; his sisters Audrey Redman (Don) and Peg Matheson (Stu), and his brother Bruce (Deb). His parents Jack and Bella Cawsey, his Stepmother, Florence, and his brothers Buzz and Lorne, predeceased him. Allan was first and foremost a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. Allan joined the Army Cadets in Calgary when he was 12 and then the RCMP in 1941. In 1942, when he was old enough, he enlisted with the Calgary Tanks. He served in Sicily and the Italian Campaign during the Second World War. He graduated with an LLB from the University of Alberta in 1951 and practiced law in Wetaskiwin until 1974 when he was appointed to the Provincial Court of Alberta. Then in 1976, he became the first Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Alberta. In 1979, he was appointed a Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench, a position from which he retired in 1997. He will be remembered for his valued mentoring within Alberta's legal system. Allan fought all of his battles hard, from those during the Second World War, to those during his distinguished legal career, and ultimately, to those with his failing health. Allan considered it important that one be not only committed to his family and profession, but also to his community. Over the years, he gave his time, energy and resources to the 19th Alberta Dragoons, the Kiwanis Club, the Wetaskiwin School and Library Boards, The United Church, the Royal Canadian Legion, and the arts community, first in Wetaskiwin and then later in Edmonton. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 6, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at St Paul's United Church, 11526 - 76 Avenue, Edmonton. In lieu of flowers it is the family's wish that donations be made in his memory to the YMCA, 10030 - 102 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta T5J OG5.
