LOUDON – Robert Carlton (Bob)(Santa) Whitten was 66 when he passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday, March 15, 2014, at his home in Loudon. He was born in Framingham, Mass. on Feb. 26,1948, to Louville and Christy Ann Whitten. He grew up in Natick, Mass. and spent childhood summers in Nova Scotia. He joined the Army and served in Vietnam as a Scout Dog Handler in the 9th Infantry Division. He received the Bronze Star for Valor. After the war, he attended MIT and later graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Saint Anselm College. He was an electrical engineer for 30 years at Osram Sylvania and held two patents.Bob was married for 40 years to his beloved wife, Marilyn Whitten. He was actively involved with the community serving as 4-H leader and scoutmaster for the Loudon Boy Scout Troop #247 for many years. He had many hobbies that included reading, debating, woodcarving, popcorn stringing day, leather-working, traveling, poetry, music, farming and inventing. He especially enjoyed riding motorcycles with his wife, family and friends. He founded the Concord HOG chapter and the Northerners motorcycle club. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion Post #88.Since retiring Bob and Marilyn have served the Salvation Army as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus (complete with pipe) in downtown Concord.He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his sister, Sherry Morrison; four children and eight grandchildren.A reception will be held Friday, March 21, at noon at Alan's Restaurant in Boscawen.
