FRANKLIN - Robert C. Clay, 87, of South Bay Road, died April 28, 2009, after a brief illness. He was born Feb. 10, 1922, in Dover, N.H., the son of Arthur and Ethel (Judd) Clay. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and prior to entering the service, he was a drill press operator for Pratt & Whitney, East Hartford, Conn. Bob lived in Windham, N.H., for more than 30 years before moving to Gilmanton Iron Works in 1985. Prior to his retirement in 1984, he worked for Boston and Maine Railroad, first as a fireman and then as an engineer, working out of North Station, Boston. "Bob," as his friends knew him, enjoyed gardening, playing cards, watching movies and spending time with family. He had resided at Mountain Vista Retirement Home since November 2006. Prior to that, he lived with his son, Allen, in Franklin and traveled to Florida in the winter to be near friends and his only daughter, Sandra. He is survived by his two sons, Robert Linwood of Tennessee and Allen of Franklin; and daughter, Sandra of Palm Bay, Fla. He also leaves several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Violetta Louise (Jalbert) Clay, in August 1994. Services will be private.
