HAVERHILL - Rita M. (McLaughlin) Smith, 70, of Haverhill, a Lowell native and former Chelmsford resident, died unexpectedly yesterday, Feb. 15, at her home. She was the wife of Donald Smith. She was born in Lowell on Nov. 2, 1935, a daughter of the late Charles A. and Irene A. (Audoin) McLaughlin. She attended St. Margaret Grammar School, and graduated from Lowell High School. In her early years, Mrs. Smith was employed as a comptometer operator, which involved in operating a business calculator with the former McGowan Educator Crax in Lowell. She enjoyed spending time with her dog, Misty. She is survived by a daughter, Melissa Smith and her companion, Steven Groulx, of Chester, N.H.; a grandson, Steven C. Groulx of Chester, N.H.; a brother and his wife, Charles and Charletta McLaughlin of Wakefield, N.H.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ann Reeney of Nashua, and Mary and Robert Day of Townsend; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smith was also the sister-in-law of the late Edward L. Reeney Jr.
