SMITH RITA M. - It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Rita M. Smith (age 97) Tuesday November 11th,2008 at her residence at Huron Lodge in Elliot Lake. Loving mother of the late Marguerite Mitchell of Spanish. Cherished grandmother of Cherylynn (Mark Grittner) Mitchell, Marvia Mitchell, Steven (Erin)Mitchell and great grandmother of two. Rita is survived by two sisters; Hilda (93), Rickenda (Bubs) (84) and her brother Tom (89). She was the younger sister to Bill and much admired older sister to Dulcie, Win, John, and Lawrence (all predeceased). Rita was the member of her generation who travelled most and farthest. Born in Denial Bay, South Australia, moved to Canada in the 70's as the much loved granny Smith to relatives in Spanish. She then moved to Huron Lodge in Elliot Lake sharing her energy& joy for life with her many new friends. Her Aussie family remember with pleasure her welcome sojourns in South Australia and her tales of survival after being caught in England when WWII broke out. She was a fantastic camp cook, a high energy person and very engaged with those around her. Her nieces also appreciated the home base provided in Canada when they followed her example and set off to explore the world. She was much loved and will be truly missed for the way she enriched all our lives. A memorial service will be held in North Bay Saturday November 27,2008 and internment in Spanish at a later date in the spring. Her family would like to express their gratitude to Gill, Carroll and all the staff at Huron Lodge for their care and concern for Rita.
