Born in Swanton on July 2, 1945, she was the daughter of Conrad M. Sr. and the late Blanche Barrett Gauthier. She attended the former Saint Anne's Academy in Swanton and furthered her studies graduating from Amherst College in Putnam, Conn. Rita was a kind, gentle and caring person. She was always a teacher in all aspects of her life with family and friends, and as a dedicated professional in her teaching career. Rita taught school for more than 40 years retiring due to illness after more than a 20 year association with the Saint Albans City School District. She was a nature lover, well versed in many areas, and family and friends frequently turned to her to answer their questions. She gained an inner strength from the world of nature. Rita was an artistic person, and she displayed this quality whether in drawing, setting a table, arranging flowers, or decorating her house for every holiday. She was a wonderful cook, and always enjoyed entertaining her guests. Rita was a meticulous planner and was always prepared for every outing, from producing a table cloth for a roadside picnic to providing a poncho for all in an unexpected shower. She was a strong and gentle spirit who touched many lives. She was loved and will be missed. Rita is survived by her spouse Phyllis Marshall of Swanton; a son David Anderson of Jay, Vt.; a daughter Heather Mentzer and husband Dana and their children, Reuben, Mason and Tyler all of Aurora, Calif.; her father Conrad M. Rita's family would like to offer a most sincere "Thank You" to the staff and management of the Franklin County Home Health Agency - Hospice Program for the love, care and support that they gave to Rita her during her illness. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at 11 a.m., from Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 38 Grand Avenue, Swanton. The Reverend Reid D. Farrell will be the celebrant and homilist. There will be no public calling hours however the family will receive friends immediately following the liturgy at a reception in the church parish hall.
