Rita Censale Smith, 86, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully at home on Oct. 22, 2014. She was born in Fitchburg, Mass., of native Italian parents. It was to her family that she owed her devotion to God, her strong faith, her family values Ñ and her talent as a cook. She and her husband, Al, moved to Gainesville, Fla., in 1963, where he was a professor at the University of Florida. They relocated to St. Augustine in 1998.In Gainesville, Rita worked for 17 years at the Volunteer Center, an office providing volunteers to a number of social service agencies. Her signature contribution to this effort was the creation of "Hope for the Holidays," a program offering community support to hundreds of needy families during the Christmas season. Rita was most proud of her family. She is survived by her husband, Al; her four children, Zack, Roslind (Dave), David (Diane) and Andrea (Mike); and her 10 grandchildren, whom she loved very much. She recently welcomed her first great-granddaughter. Rita was a devout Catholic, a member of the Cathedral Basilica and a lay Carmelite. She cherished her times spent at the House of Prayer.A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church, 86 M.L. King Jr. Avenue, St. Augustine. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the House of Prayer at 30 Ocean Avenue, St. Augustine, FL 32084 or to the Capital Restoration Project at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine at 35 Treasury St., St. Augustine, FL 32084.
