CASEY, Rita (nee Taylor) December 14, 1923 - August 6, 2013 Rita passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 6, 2013, with her family by her side. Born in Bournemouth, England, to Irene and Henry Taylor, Rita was one of four siblings. After having finished school, Rita joined the W.A.A.F. in 1940 and trained as a photographer. Some of her early memories of that time include cycling out alone onto the airfield at night to unload the huge cameras from incoming aircraft, then developing the photographs for Bomber Command. In 1945, Rita and Glen (Robbie) Robinson (R.C.A.F.) were married, and came to live in Saskatchewan (Meadow Lake and Regina), where Donna and Murray were born. After Rita and Glen parted ways, Rita and the children moved to Victoria in 1956. In 1961, Rita and Douglas Casey were married. Their joint family included Stewart (Doug's son), and Ross, born in 1964. Rita had worked for many years for the Federal Government in Regina, and the Provincial Government in B.C. and at Naden in Esquimalt. Rita moved to Sidney after Doug's death in 2003. Rita was a gracious lady of great warmth and loving-kindness. She had a subtle sense of humour and a beautiful laugh. Devoted to her family, she always had others 'under her wing' too, especially children and elders. Rita was a talented cook and homemaker, specializing in wonderful family dinners. She had many interests including reading, gardening, nutrition and knitting, and, often 'ahead of her time,' Rita was passionate about social justice and environmental issues. She loved music of all kinds, from classical to Elton John, played piano by ear, and sang with a lovely soprano voice. Rita's grandchildren - Sean, Meghan, Shannon, Jennifer, Andrew, Brenden, Shaelynne, and great-grandchildren, Lluvia, Aedan and Kiara -were her special joy over the years. Animal-companions were a large part of Rita's life - Tabitha and Star, her cats. The family dogs, Susie, Benny, Jessa and Echo were often the focus of fun family outings. Rita was always able to find pleasure in the small details of ordinary life, whether it be a conversation in the sun with someone she had just met, or seeing a particularly good tennis match (her favourite player being Djokovic). Rita 'never gave up,' facing the challenges of her life with courage, faith and optimism. Rita is survived by her sister, Zita vandenAkker, in Bournemouth, England; her children, Donna Robinson (Graham Taylor), Murray Robinson, Ross Casey, Stewart (Pat) Casey, Colleen (Larry) Brickman, Kevin Foster; Angeline McLaren; grandchildren, Sean Casey (Sarah Isaacs), Meghan (Davis) Azofeifa Casey, Shannon Brickman, Jennifer Brickman, Andrew Casey, Brenden Casey, Shaelynne McLaren-Casey, Lee (Janet) Robinson, Egan Robinson, Mae (Bud) Thorne; great grandchildren, Lluvia, Aedan and Kiara Azofeifa Casey; nieces, Jennifer (Ray) Hart, Rose (James) Springett, Jacqueline (John) Black and Trees; nephews, David (Susan) Ralph and Clayton, Wayne (Brenda) Ralph, Richard (Susan) vandenAkker, Jim (Mair) vandenAkker, Jeffrey Taylor; and many dear friends. Predeceased by Patricia (Frank) Robinson, step-daughter. The family would like to thank Dr. Ritonja, the Emergency staff at V.G.H., the nurses and physicians of 4S; all the staff and friends at The Peninsula, Peter Day, Chaplain and Kim Erb. The many kindnesses to our Mother were so much appreciated. There will be a Celebration of Life for Rita at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canada Comforts Society, Victoria; the BCSPCA or a charity of choice. Condolences may be offered to the family at the Guestbook, www.remembering.ca. Love is Eternal
