Richard Spalding RogerOctober 23, 2012Richard Spalding Rogers, 97, of Cape Coral passed away peacefully October 23, 2012, in his home surrounded by his loving daughter Linda and his dear friends Dr. Edward and Barbara Healey. Richard graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1937 and Naval Flight Training at Pensacola, Florida in 1940. He retired from the Navy as a Captain after 34 years of distinguished service. During his more than 3 decades of service, he was awarded the Silver Star Medal, four Distinguished Flying Crosses, four Air Medals, three Presidential Unit Citations, and four Letters of Commendation. He flew nearly 10,000 hours in Naval aircraft, mostly fighters, and made over 350 carrier landings. Captain Rogers is a fifth generation Texan. His forbearers fought against Mexico in Texas' War of Independence. He was a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas and a member of the Naval Order of the United States and has been given special recognition by former Governor of Texas Ann Richards. Richard Rogers exemplified the meaning of an officer and a gentleman. He was a good, brave, honorable and highly respectedman. He now rests eternally with his beloved wife of 71 years, Dorothy Marilyn "Lynn" Rogers. His and his wife's ashes will be scattered at sea. He is survived by his daughter Linda Rogers Weinberger of New York City; son Geoffrey Spalding Rogers; grandchildren Laura Rogers Davan, Alexandra Rogers-Pittman, and Andrew Rogers; and two great-grandchildren.
