->GOULDSBORO POINT - Richard Leland Perry, passed away at home, Oct. 8, 2014. Born in Oakland, ME, March 31, 1935, Richard attended schools in Steuben, Gouldsboro and, upon graduation from Sumner High School in 1954, joined the US Air Force. While stationed in Texas he met Loretta, his wife of 50 years. After four years of service as a Medic, he was honorably discharged as an Airman First Class before attending heavy equipment training in NC. He returned to Maine, working on the interstate highway system across the state. Dick moved his family to Texas for three years and worked as an aircraft mechanic before coming home to Maine for good in 1968 to be a lobster fisherman for the next 30 years. During off season, he worked for three local contractors and could recall each job as he traveled past former work sites. Dick also accumulated several pieces of earth moving equipment which he enjoyed using on family land.He retired from fishing in 2004 but was a continual presence on Gouldsboro Point. He drove between his home and his wharf, sometimes more than once in a day and at his own pace so he didn't miss a deer, wild turkey or a chance to talk with a neighbor on the road. If you were lucky enough to be his driver you were reminded to "not go too fast or you'll miss something". At the wharf with field glasses by his side, he'd watch for geese, blackbacks or other goings on.Richard was predeceased by his parents Colon and Ruby (Bickford) Perry and a brother, Forrest (Sonny) Perry and sister-in-law, Pauline Perry. He is survived by his wife, Loretta Perry, daughter, Victoria (Underwood) Lanning and husband, Wayne, of Lincolnville and their sons, Ian of Glen Cove, NY and Samuel of Lincolnville; son, Patrick Perry, of Gouldsboro and his daughters, Elizabeth and Isabelle Perry of Ellsworth. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Hodgkins, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He loved his children and grandchildren and was so proud of each of their accomplishments. Having spent many hours making music on his own guitar, it brought Dick much pleasure over the last few years to see at least three of them develop the same attraction for picking out a tune.A Celebration of Life officiated by Rev. Reginald Clark will be held October 18, 2014, at 1 p.m. at the Milbridge United Methodist Church. Contributions in Dick's memory may be made to www.K9'sforwarriors.org or K9's For Warriors, 260 S. Roscoe Blvd., Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082.
