CLINTON -- Richard Arthur Goodwin, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and brother, died early Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at his home in Clinton. He was born on Jan. 17, 1933, in Burnham, to Lawrence P. and Doris L. Goodwin. Dick was educated in the schools of Clinton and Fairfield. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954.After owning a dairy farm in Skowhegan for several years, he opened a grocery store on Main Street in Clinton in 1961. Dick expanded his business in 1969, building a new store just down the street from the first store. Dick's passion was his grocery store, and he took great pride in providing a full-service grocery store for the people of Clinton. Even though his son, Sanford, managed the store, Dick was in the store nearly every day. Dick bought a grocery store in Unity in the early 1990s, and sold it eight years later after turning it into a profitable business.He was a 50-year member and past master of Sebasticook Lodge No. 146 A.F. & A.M. In Clinton, a 50-year member and past Lion king of the Clinton Lions Club, a 50-year member of the American Legion Post 186 in Clinton, a member and past president of the Maine Grocers Association, a member and past patron of Fireside Chapter 103, Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Anah Shrine, a member of The Valley of Augusta and Portland Scottish Rite Bodies, and a former member of the Jaycees. Dick served for 17 years on the board of directors for Associated Grocers of Maine and four years as chairman of the board. He was a recipient of the Spirit of America Award from the National Grocers Association. He was a member of Brown Memorial United Methodist Church in Clinton. Dick believed that one should support one's community, and served on various town committees, as well as a director on the board of the Clinton Water District.He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Sharon.He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; his sons, Lawrence, and his wife, Kelli, and their children, Cameron and Brad, Sanford and his wife, Heather, and their children, Reise and Bryce; his stepson, George Dewey Clark III, and his wife, Sue, and their children, Dewey and his sons, Austin and Anthony, Bo and his wife, Elizabeth, and their daughter, Jocelyn, and Matt and his wife, Kellie. Dick is also survived by his brother, Jerry, and his wife, Sylvia, of Niceville, Fla., and their children, Mark, Scott and Shannon and their families; Sharon's children, Harold Jr., Nancy, Debbie, Larry, Lori, Robin and Renee, and their families; his dear "Sis," Ellen Lunt, and her husband, Fred; many nieces and nephews; several cousins; and special friends, Blynn and Florence Galusha, and Ray and Joyce Dickey.Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Masonic evening memorial service to begin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 11, at Brown Memorial United Methodist Church, 13 Church St., Clinton, with pastor Judith Gould officiating. Spring burial will be at Greenlawn Rest Cemetery in Clinton.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brown Memorial United Methodist Church, Roof Project, P.O. Box 58, Clinton, ME 04927; or Humane Society Waterville Area, 100 Webb Road, Waterville, ME 04901.An online guestbook may be signed and memories shared at www.lawrybrothers.com Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, 107 Main St., Fairfield.
