THELMA JUANITA SMITH JACKSON, 75 TALLAHASSEE - The Reverend Thelma Juanita Smith Jackson, 75, a native and longtime resident of Lakeland, FL, died Thursday, April 12, 2007 in Tallahassee of respiratory failure. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2007 at p.m. at the New Mount Zion A.M.E Church, 1401 Old Bainbridge Road Tallahassee, FL with the Reverend John White II, officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 23, 2007 at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lakeland. The Reverend Jackson was a retired educator, having taught at Rochelle, Jewett and Winston Elementary Schools in Polk County. She retired as a reading specialist after serving as an educator for more than 35 years. She was an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church and had pastored St. James AME Church in Clearwater and Bethel AME in Tampa. Reverend Jackson was the widow of the Reverend Curtis Jackson, who was also an AME pastor. She was a 1952 graduate of Florida A&M University and received her masters in the Arts of Teaching from Rollins College in Orlando. Since 1992, she had resided primarily in Tallahassee. Reverend Jackson leaves to mourn her passing a devoted and loving son, Dwayne Cargile of Tallahassee and a sister, Jeanette Simmons of Ft. Washington, MD; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces nephews, other relatives and friends.
