March 16, 2003 Reverend Robert P. Barrett, born Oct. 19, 1912, was a native of Solvay and attended St. Patrick's School. He graduated from St. Mary's College, Kentucky, and Mt. Saint Mary of the West Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio by Bishop James A. McFadden on February 2, 1948. Father Barrett served in parishes in Canton, Canal Fulton, and Alliance, all in Ohio. The majority of his priesthood was spent in India with Catholic Relief Services. He worked closely with then Speaker of The House John W. McCormack, and Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan in the development of the 900 bed John McCormack Medical Training Hospital, and the St. John's Medical College in Bangalore, India. He received a reserved commission in the United States Air Force Chaplain Corps in 1980. Father Barrett retired from active ministry on Feb. 1, 1976. Since that time, he has resided at Pius X Home for retired Priests, but has served on a temporary basis in dozens of churches in the Syracuse Diocese. Father Barrett was predeceased by one sister, Katherine Barrett; two brothers, Francis Joseph Barrett and Reverend John Barrett, and a nephew; Jack Barrett. He is survived by his nephew and niece, Robert Barrett and Barbara Barrett. Services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday at St. Patrick's Church, Syracuse. Father Barrett will lie in state in the church from 8:30 to 10:30 AM Friday. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. Edward J. Ryan & Son Funeral Home
